What was Bancor&#8217;s original vision?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mark Richardson (Bancor):<\/strong> Bancor created the first Constant Product AMM \u2014 a type of decentralized exchange algorithm \u2014 back in 2017. The core idea was to let users create markets without needing centralized market makers. It came from recognizing that just like content became user-generated with platforms like YouTube, currencies had become user-generated with Bitcoin. But they needed liquidity \u2014 and Bancor solved that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Korath (Gamma Prime):<\/strong> So the model allowed new tokens to become liquid without external help?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mark Richardson (Bancor):<\/strong> Exactly. You could launch a token and bootstrap liquidity instantly. That was revolutionary. It enabled DeFi before we even called it DeFi. But while this constant product model was elegant, it wasn\u2019t perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Korath (Gamma Prime):<\/strong> What were the limitations?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mark Richardson (Bancor):<\/strong> Capital inefficiency and high slippage. Since prices are calculated continuously for each unit traded, larger trades lead to more slippage. The pricing curve is elegant mathematically, but not trader-friendly at scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Korath (Gamma Prime):<\/strong> So how did Bancor address that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mark Richardson (Bancor):<\/strong> In 2020, we introduced amplified liquidity \u2014 which compresses liquidity into specific price ranges. That evolved into what the space now knows as \u201cconcentrated liquidity.\u201d It improves efficiency and mimics how traditional order books work, but still keeps the DeFi benefits of permissionless access and composability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Korath (Gamma Prime):<\/strong> And now you\u2019ve taken it further with Carbon?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mark Richardson (Bancor):<\/strong> Yes. Carbon is a new generation AMM that allows users to define bid and ask prices independently. In other words, you can say: \u201cI\u2019ll buy ETH between $1800\u2013$2000, but I won\u2019t sell it unless it hits $4000.\u201d It gives users full control over their strategy \u2014 a dynamic, automated way to \u201cbuy low, sell high.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Korath (Gamma Prime):<\/strong> That&#8217;s powerful \u2014 especially for traders and structured strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mark Richardson (Bancor):<\/strong> Absolutely. What\u2019s important is that the protocol no longer dictates how liquidity works \u2014 the user does. This is critical when we talk about integrating real-world assets (RWAs). You need systems that let users define how value is exchanged, not rigid systems designed only for crypto-native tokens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Korath (Gamma Prime):<\/strong> Let\u2019s go there \u2014 RWAs. What\u2019s Bancor\u2019s take on them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mark Richardson (Bancor):<\/strong> Real-world assets are coming. From gold to carbon credits to energy markets, all of these have unique market behaviors. Current DEXs don\u2019t let you replicate those dynamics. They assume everything trades like a meme coin. But RWAs require nuanced pricing, spreads, premiums \u2014 all the elements traditional finance expects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Korath (Gamma Prime):<\/strong> So DeFi needs to learn from TradFi?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mark Richardson (Bancor):<\/strong> In some ways, yes. We don\u2019t need to replicate it, but we do need to support its complexity. For example, if you&#8217;re trading tokenized gold, you need to account for storage, insurance, spot pricing, etc. Our tools \u2014 like Carbon \u2014 are designed with that flexibility in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Korath (Gamma Prime):<\/strong> What about trust? How do we ensure that the tokenized asset is actually backed?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mark Richardson (Bancor):<\/strong> That\u2019s where oracles come in. Blockchains don\u2019t natively know anything about the real world. So you need external data sources \u2014 oracles \u2014 to verify prices, custody, delivery. If your oracle is flawed, your tokenized asset is flawed. That\u2019s why transparency and strong standards matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Korath (Gamma Prime):<\/strong> Sounds like a tech-regulation hybrid challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mark Richardson (Bancor):<\/strong> Exactly. It&#8217;s not just smart contracts \u2014 it&#8217;s compliance, legal structures, and auditability. And sadly, DeFi often over-indexes on hype and under-invests in clarity. We need protocols to prioritize disclosures \u2014 not just marketing decks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Korath (Gamma Prime):<\/strong> You mentioned earlier that DeFi has become more \u201cVC-pitch\u201d than protocol paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mark Richardson (Bancor):<\/strong> Yes. Back in 2019\u20132020, whitepapers had depth. Now, many projects opt for flashy decks with little detail. That\u2019s a disservice. If we want to onboard institutional capital, we need standards \u2014 even peer-reviewed frameworks for describing protocols and risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Korath (Gamma Prime):<\/strong> So what&#8217;s next for Bancor?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mark Richardson (Bancor):<\/strong> We&#8217;re doubling down on programmable liquidity. We\u2019re building infrastructure that adapts to what users \u2014 whether individuals or institutions \u2014 actually need. That means more tools like Carbon, and more focus on cross-chain, compliance-friendly integrations.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Conclusion:<\/strong> From inventing AMMs to enabling customizable liquidity strategies, Bancor continues to shape DeFi\u2019s next phase.
